Couples counselling… could it actually help?

Couples therapy for trauma after an affair

If you’re looking at this page, this next part won’t come as a surprise to you. Relationships are hard, but our team of couples counsellors and therapists in Saskatoon are here to make sure you don’t have to go through it alone.

Relationships are at the core of our human experience—but they are also often the most difficult parts. Our relationships can be a source of joy and comfort, or they can be a place of hurt and disappointment. By working with a couples counsellor, you will be able to understand where the breakdown or disconnect is in your marriage or relationship and develop ways of repairing and strengthening your emotional connection.

We create a safe space for you and your partner to unpack the messy parts of your relationship and leave feeling lighter and more connected.

Dating couple conflict resolution

These are some of the most common issues couples want to address in marriage or relationship counselling:

  • Trouble communicating or understanding one another

  • Difficulty resolving conflicts

  • One or both partners withdraw or “shut down” in the middle of crucial conversations

  • Broken trust following an affair or infidelity

  • Recovering from trauma or unhelpful attachment patterns from childhood

  • A general sense of disconnection from your partner

If you see yourself in the list above, know that you’re not alone. Booking a session with a couples counsellor could be the first step towards a happier healthier life with the person you fell in love with.

Emotionally-Focused Therapy

The emotional connection between you and your partner is the foundation of a healthy relationship. But when the things of life start to interfere with your core attachment needs—safety, comfort, support, and validation—that foundation can deteriorate quickly or seemingly disappear altogether.

Our counsellors are trained to offer Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT), an evidence-based approach to couples counselling that focuses on improving the emotional bonds between partners. It works to help couples repair and strengthen their relationships by prioritizing emotional connection and responsiveness.

Emotionally focused couples therapy EFT

This is what you can expect:

In an EFT session, your counsellor will help you to identify and understand your relational patterns—which we like to call “the cycle.” The cycle is where each partner’s actions, emotions, and thoughts trigger and feed off of the other partner’s actions, emotions, and thoughts. In a healthy marriage or relationship, these patterns enhance the emotional connection. But, at times, couples experience the opposite…

Most couples coming in to therapy feel “stuck” in these patterns of disconnection, fear, shame, hurt, and hopelessness. Thankfully, EFT has been shown to change these relationship patterns for long-term transformation!

Couples who try EFT often find it helps their marriage or relationship with improved communication, increased emotional connection, resolution of conflict, and greater relational satisfaction.
